The 2016 ride took place from 10th to 12th September 2016. It was called the Second City Cycle. The route was the canal path alongside the Grand Union Canal. I still have nightmares about it to this day.
The first day started dry but the heavens soon opened. The nice paved section ran out around Hounslow, becoming gravelly puddles. At least we could wash our bikes in the canal at the end of the day.
After overnighting in Tring, the second day was actually warm and sunny. But the puddles were still there. The nice gravelly path ran out after Berkhamsted and became a mud track. Colin fell in. There are no pictures of this as people were too busy rescuing him. He and the bike were fine. The average speed was 16 km/hour.
After overnighting in Northampton, the final day was sunny but with a persistent head wind. The nice mud track soon ran out and became a narrow slippery path with brambles on one side and water the other. Never have a group of people been so thankful to enter Solihull, when the track became paved again. The average speed was 14.7 km/hour.
Fisher & Paykel Healthcare organised a canal boat with refreshments in Birmingham, for which we are eternally grateful.
